Watch Out! - How to buy a new car when ordering from the factory.

Some dealers will try to fool you into thinking if you order your vehicle from the factory (instead of buying a vehicle that is stocked at the dealership) that you will have to pay more. Actually, you should pay less when you order from the factory, because the dealer does not have to pay floor interest on the vehicle. Dealers do not pay the full purchase price for vehicles when they get them from the factory. They pay the factory floor interest, which is a percentage of the total price paid monthly for the time the dealer stocks the vehicle. The longer the dealer has the vehicle, the more interest they will have to pay. If you buy from the factory, the dealer will not have to pay any floor interest. You may even be able to get a better deal on a car ordered from the factory and certainly should never pay more for a factory model than you would when you buy a floor model from the dealership.

How do you trade in a used car when your buying a new car from the factory?

This can be tricky because dealers will often want to determine the value of your used car trade in once your new vehicle arrives, and this leaves you open to being low-balled by the dealer. A way around this is to have the dealership manager agree in writing that when your new vehicle arrives you have the right to have the value of your trade in appraised by and sold to another source if they can beat the dealerships offer on your used car trade in.

If the dealer does not have the model of car I want should I have them locate one for me?

No! Dealers are happy to locate the model you want from other dealerships but this is probably going to mean you pay more in the end. If one dealer locates the specific model you want at another dealership you now how two dealerships and multiple salesmen involved. Do you think the original dealership which has been paying floor interest on your vehicle is going to give it up to your dealership for free? Absolutely not! If the dealership does not have the model that you want go to another dealership (you can easily locate dealerships that stock the models you want using car buying services like Car Works, Invoice Dealers, Edmunds, Auto Web and Autos.com

Buying popular models.

If you try to buy a model that is really popular you are going to have a tough time getting a good deal because the dealership is less motivated to sell to you with so many other people buying. The car prices on some really hot models can rise above MSRP. If the car price is above MSRP I would suggest wait a few months to buy the car. The model will almost certainly cool off, lowering the car price and you will be able to get a much better deal on it.
