Volvo's crossover vehicle, the XC90, is adopting the new Volvo V-8. This will replace the turbocharged six-cylinder version in the coming months. In the meantime, a turbocharged five-cylinder engine remains the standard power plant. Only automatic transmissions are available. Acceleration from either the five- or six-cylinder engine is adequate. The six is not that much quicker on acceleration runs, but feels better on the road. It is more refined, more flexible and copes with hills better. Handling is secure. Volvo's roll stability system is a breakthrough and a major plus. The ride is firm but comfortable. Rough road composure is very good. Room and comfort in front are good. The back seat is acceptable for adults. The optional third row seats fold easily to form a flat floor, but offer little room. They are for children only. Conclusion: It drives and rides well and is roomy and comfortable. Prices for base versions are also attractive enough to keep the XC90 in the running when compared to its import rivals. |
