| The Volvo V50 is the wagon version of the S40 sedan. As such, it parallels the performance of the sedan.
Two five-cylinder engines are offered. The high performance version is turbocharged. The base engine does nicely enough; the turbo motor is noticeably quicker, though both are noisy on full-throttle acceleration. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, the manual is a pleasure to use with a light, linear clutch and precise linkage. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. Handling is very good. The ride is firm, but generally comfortable. Room and comfort in front are good. Despite the valuable addition of room in the rear as compared to the V40 wagon this model replaces, accommodations in the back seat lack leg room with the front seats moved back. The cargo area is good thanks to the wagon body style and the rear seats are split and fold. Conclusion: A good performance and all of Volvo's expected safety systems make the V-50 wagon appealing, despite its premium pricing. |
