| Volvo's premium sedan is in the process of undergoing a drivetrain redo. Already, the turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive has taken the place of the base, normally aspirated six. It was followed by a 2.5T front-wheel drive version. Expect Volvo's new V-8 to replace the turbocharged six cylinder engine in the future.
The S80 is roomy and comfortable, front and rear. The car rides with stability and composure over a wide range of surfaces. Handling is very good, if not very sporty. Five-cylinder models are moderately refined. The turbo six is quite smooth and delivers good power. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Conclusion: A roomy and comfortable large car, the Volvo S80 delivers all of the virtues expected of the brand. The competition in this class is strong, however, so plan to shop around. |
