| Based on the European Ford Focus platform, which it shares with the Mazda3, the Volvo S40 performs well and is a significant improvement over the previous S40. The new sedan is roomier and more competent on the road than the car it replaces. Two five-cylinder engines are offered. The high performance version is turbocharged. The base engine does nicely enough; the turbo motor is noticeably quicker, though both become noisy on full-throttle acceleration. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, the manual is a pleasure to use with a light, linear clutch and precise linkage. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. Handling is very good with above average steering feedback. The ride is firm, which produces some abrupt movement over larger bumps. Room and comfort in front are good. Despite the valuable addition of room in the rear, accommodations in the back seat lack leg room with the front seats moved back. The cargo area is fair, with a small truck lid further limiting flexibility. The rear seats are split and fold. Conclusion: A good performance and all of Volvo's expected safety systems make the V-40 appealing despite its premium pricing. Of greater importance, Volvo has managed to make enough improvements to separate its offering on this platform from Mazda's. |
