| That Toyota is already into its second generation Prius Hybrid before most manufacturers have fielded their first generation vehicle is telling. This newest Prius is a capable family sedan, as well as being the poster car for the ecologically engaged. The Prius can run on its gasoline engine, its electric motor, or combine the two for maximum performance. A continuously variable automatic transmission is standard. While it has a battery pack for the electric motor, the driver never has to plug the car into an outlet to recharge the batteries. The Prius takes care of that all by itself. Acceleration is adequate. Fuel economy is exceptional. However, the Prius does best when the conditions are at their worst. Expect steady-state highway cruising numbers to fall into the low-40-mile-per-gallon range. The ride is firm but comfortable. Handling is stable and predictable. Inside, the Prius is comfortable in front and better than average in the rear. Cargo room in this hatchback sedan is good. Conclusion: Its new technology is clearly ready for primetime. Buyers interested primarily in economy should work the numbers carefully. Payback for the added cost of this hybrid design could be a long time coming. Also, check with your accountant for any tax benefits at the state and federal level. Where applicable, those can shorten the payback period. |
