Top Pick The Highlander is Toyota's version of the Lexus RX 330. It does not share the Lexus' sloped rear styling, however, and has a couple of extra inches in height. That makes it roomier and since it is less expensive, even with the V-6 engine option, it could be argued that it is a much better buy.

Four-cylinder models feel sluggish. The V-6 with the five-speed automatic accelerates very well. Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive an option with either engine. On the road, the Highlander is quiet, stable and commendably refined. Handling is quite good, although lean is noticeable in brisk cornering. Inside, there is room for five with ample space left over for luggage. An optional third row seat is for small children only. A hybrid model is coming, but has been delayed.

Conclusion: This is a first-class crossover vehicle.
