Toyota adds a new performance version to the subcompact Corolla lineup for 2005. The XRS features a 170 horsepower four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. While we have not driven this version yet, buyers should note that in other applications, this engine has to be revved high to extract maximum performance.

Other Corollas are more mundane, but still turn in an adequate performance for the subcompact field. Their engines are smooth and economical, if not overly powerful.

Handling is average for the field, as is ride quality. The Corollas are thoroughly competent subcompacts.

Inside, the front passengers enjoy average room and comfort. The rear passengers do okay as long as the front seats are not moved all the way to the rear. Trunk room is average. All Corollas feature folding rear seats.

Conclusion: A solid subcompact performer, the Corolla is an excellent buy in the field.
