Toyota is winding down the Celica after 35 years. Production is scheduled to stop in July 2005.

Until then, the Celica will continue to offer good levels of driving pleasure in its two models. The base vehicle accelerates adequately with the 140-horsepower engine. The GT-S is quicker with the 180-horsepower four-cylinder motor. However, both engines have to be revved to produce maximum performance. The manual transmissions-a five-speed with the 140-horsepower engine and a six-speed with the 180-horsepower motor-do better than the four-speed automatic.

Handling is precise, stable and responsive. The ride is firm and often busy, sometimes even harsh. Noise levels are above average.

Comfort is fair in front. The low roof requires a low seat, but even with that headroom is not abundant. The back seat is a cruel joke for adults. Fold it, and the hatchback body has reasonable cargo space, however.

Conclusion: It's small, it's fun and it's responsive. It's also going away shortly.
