| The Solara coupe picked up a companion last year: a new convertible. Coupes come with four- or six-cylinder power. The convertible is available only with a V-6. Both models are intended for mature buyers who are more interest in comfort than lightning fast reflexes. Still, handling is responsive and the cars are predictable when pressed in turns. Steering is too light, however. The four-cylinder engine performs well; the V-6 does much better. V-6 models could be mistaken for near-luxury vehicles. The ride is composed, comfortable and stable. Coupes are very quiet. The convertible with the top up also offers reasonably quiet cruising at highway speeds. Front seat comfort is good. The back seat of the coupe is a hassle to reach, but once there adults will find a reasonable amount of room. The convertible also has room for two adults in the rear. Conclusion: The coupe market is not what it used to be, but for those who still want this body style, the Solara has to be considered. The convertible is also a solid and refined performer. |
