| Last year's redesign unveiled a markedly improved 4Runner with either standard V-6 or optional V-8 power. While the V-8 is only slightly quicker than the V-6 when the vehicle is empty, the V-8 performs with more refinement. Either engine is adequate for most uses. Fuel economy is, at best, fair. The vehicle's weight is apparent during brisk cornering, but the 4Runner is predictable, though not overly eager, in corners. The ride is very good for the class, though not as smooth and stable over bumps as many crossover vehicles. Four-wheel drive 4Runners are also quite capable when taken off road. The 4Runner is roomy and comfortable in the first and second row seats. The recent addition of a third row seats reminds us why Toyota did not offer this feature originally. It is neither roomy nor comfortable. Cargo space without this third seat is above average for the field. Conclusion: A good blend of on- and off-road performance with smooth drivetrains and a roomy interior, the 4Runner has a lot to recommend it. |
