| Redesigned for 2005, the Outback sedans and wagons are based on the Legacy versions of these body styles. Outbacks, however, have a raised suspension and styling cues designed to make onlookers think the vehicle is a rough-and-tumble SUV, which it is not. Instead, it is a capable and nicely mannered road car with some light-duty off road capabilities. Three engines are available, a 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed four, the same engine with a turbocharger and a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder motor. So far, only the turbocharged four has been available for review, and it is impressive. Acceleration is very quick. Steering and handling are quite good. The higher stance of the Outback detracts some from cornering when compared to the Legacy. Lean is more noticeable. Still, these Subarus are fun to drive, responsive and predictable in corners. Ride qualities are also quite good. Even big bumps are handled with aplomb. Front seats are about average for room and comfort. The back seat is only a little less appealing for adults. Cargo room is fair in sedans; much better in wagons. Conclusion: The new Outback with its standard all-wheel drive deserves careful consideration, but unless you really need the added ground clearance or want the six, the Legacy is a better choice. |
