| Redesigned for 2005, the Legacy sedans and wagons return with standard all-wheel drive, new styling and minor shifts in body dimensions. Two engines are available, both displacing 2.5-liters. Only the turbocharged version has been available for review so far, and it is very quick.
Steering and handling are impressive and rewarding in these cars. These Subarus are fun to drive, responsive and predictable in corners. Ride qualities are also quite good. Even big bumps are handled with aplomb. Front seats are about average for room and comfort. The back seat is only a little less appealing for grownups. Cargo room is fair in sedans; much better in wagons. Conclusion: The new Legacy with its standard all-wheel drive deserves careful consideration. The WRX and WRX STi are high performance cars masquerading as subcompact sedans and wagons. Engines are turbocharded to produce 227 or 300 horsepower. Both models accelerate impressively, though turbo lag and some bogging down when starting out seem to be the rule. Once underway, however, the WRX is fast, the STi is faster yet. WRX buyers can have a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual The WRX STi comes only with a six-speed manual. Handling is very good. These cars stick impressively in corners, have a nice balance and offer very good steering feedback. The ride is abrupt at times, but, considering the performance, acceptable. Front seat room is good for people just over six-feet tall. The back seat is cramped by any standard and the trunk is small. Wagons are roomier and the only model with folding second seats. Conclusion: One of the best fun-to-drive cars around, the WRX is undoubtedly the better choice for all but the most jaded power addicts. These people will opt for the much more expensive STi. |
