| Scion is Toyota's new brand meant to appeal to the country's younger consumers. Of the three models initially available, the tC hatchback coupe is the sportiest and most expensive. It is also a fine effort. Acceleration from the 2.4-liter four, also used in the Camry, is very good with the five-speed manual and perfectly acceptable with the four-speed automatic transmission. A dealer-install supercharger is an unnecessary option. Handling is particularly good. Steering responses are crisp and the car goes where it is pointed with poise and balance. The ride is acceptable and turns abrupt only when encountering potholes and some expansion joints. Room and comfort are okay in front; tight for adults in the rear. A unique panorama style sunroof is standard equipment. Assembly quality seems to be everything we have come to expect in a Toyota product. Conclusion: This is one slick coupe. Word of its fine qualities should not be confined to the younger customers Toyota sees buying Scions. |
