| Disappointing sales of the Saturn Ion since its introduction in 2003 have prompted General Motors to go back to the drawing board and make some revisions. Two body styles are available: a four-door sedan and a four-door coupe with small clamshell back doors that aid entry to the rear seat. Coupe buyers also have the option of the Red Line model, with a supercharged 205-horsepower four. The Red Line is very quick on acceleration and handles well. Other Ions, with either the four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission, are less impressive on acceleration, but adequate for family use. Handling was always good, and it remains an Ion strength in the basic models. The ride becomes harsh only on the roughest pavement. Interior space is good in front and acceptable in back. Interior materials and seat design have been improved on trim lines 2 and 3, with the Red Line coupe the best of the lot. The center instruments are now easier to read, but the location is still annoying. Despite improvements, the car still feels like the low rent district. Noise levels moderate. Conclusion: Large interiors for the field may overcome the lack of refinement in the minds of some buyers. Plastic dent-resistant side panels are another advantage and Saturn dealers generally have a good reputation. Still, there are better subcompacts. |
