The Subaru Impreza is a very nice car. That's good, because it serves as the basis for the new Saab 9-2X. General Motors not only owns Saab, it also owns part of Subaru's parent company. Thus, a Japanese car gains a Swedish nameplate, along with some detail changes.

Two models, Linear and Aero, are available. Both have all-wheel drive. Linear models feel weak off the line and acceleration is never really strong. Aero models use the 227-horsepowere WRX engine for a lively performance.

As with the Subaru Impreza, front seat comfort is fair; rear seat comfort is cramped and substandard. Handling is more pleasing, with the Aero turning in a very good performance. Saab has upgraded the Impreza, of course, in an effort to make it more appealing to its clientele. Styling changes, trim upgrades and more sound insulation serve to separate the Saab from the Subaru.

Conclusion: This is brand engineering at its best, or worst, depending on your point of view. Nonetheless, Saab has upgraded these Subarus enough to justify the more than $2,500 price premium over the comparable Impreza.
