| Porsche dealers can sell every high-powered Cayenne Turbo S they can get their hands on, while the base V-8s often languish on the lot. The answer: a new lower priced Cayenne with the 3.2-liter V-6 that powers the Volkswagen Touareg, which also shares the Cayenne's body structure. This base V-6 model will undoubtedly feel slow to anyone used to the "S" or Turbo's performance. While we've not had a chance to try this new drivetrain in the Porsche, it does little to excite in the Touareg. Neither is it particularly economical. The Cayenne S is plenty quick, however, and the Turbo is blazingly fast. Both handle nicely, too. Ride is firm, especially in the Turbo and handling is very good for the sport utility vehicle field. Note, too, that Cayennes do well in the rough. These are not light-duty crossover sport utes. Conclusion: With good comfort in front and reasonable accommodations in the rear, these Porsches perform well in the SUV field. The logic of the company heading in this direction may be questioned by some, but the performance of these products is beyond debate. |
