The Vibe is one of Pontiac's few recent success stories. It is also a product of the GM-Toyota joint venture in Freemont, California. Under the Vibe's sheet metal beats the heart of a Toyota Matrix. Base versions come with front-wheel drive and a choice of a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Opt for all-wheel drive and the automatic becomes the only transmission available. In addition, a high-powered GT is offered only with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual.

Acceleration with the base engine is adequate. Surprisingly, it is little better with the 170-horsepower version of the 1.8-liter Toyota engine. Forty more horsepower are there, but the engine has to be revved high to find them.

Ride quality is acceptable in either model, but the base versions are slightly more comfortable, though even these cars have a busy ride on broken pavement. Handling is also good regardless of model, with the GT having an edge.

Inside, the car is roomy front and rear and cargo capacity with the seats folded is quite good.

Conclusion: Who needs a small SUV? The Vibe should serve nicely instead.
