The Pontiac Montana SV6 shares its structure with the Chevrolet Uplander, Buick Terraza and Saturn Relay. These new models are supposed to diminish the fear of being seen in a minivan by offering unique frontal styling, which is said, by General Motors, to have the look of a sport utility vehicle, not a minivan. You can judge how successful this effort has been.

On the road, these minivans perform nicely. The 200-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic transmission, the only drivetrain available, provide adequate power around town. Acceleration for passing or merging is somewhat sluggish, however. All-wheel drive is an option.

Interior space is good, although room in the second and third rows is not overly generous when adults are to be the passengers. Still, this would be a better long-distance or carpool vehicle for adults than most mid-size sedans. Note that many of the clever second and third row seat folding capabilities seen in other minivans are absent in these models.

Handling is unexceptional. These minivans go where they are pointed with reasonable precision. Stopping distances are average.

Conclusion: A good upgrade from the previous minivans. A GM spokesman also promises improvement in the offset barrier crash test results for this new model. Still, these vans trail the best competitors. They are a stopgap measure until an entirely new design arrives in a few years.
