When Pontiac decided to bring back its fabled GTO, it went to GM of Australia for the vehicle. The company had no choice. There was no suitable front engine, rear-wheel drive platform in this country that could form the basis for the car.

Pontiac then stuffed a Corvette V-8 under the hood of a Holden Monaro coupe, converted the car to left-hand drive, slapped on the GTO label and stepped back waiting for hordes of customers who never came.

For 2005, Pontiac is regrouping with a 400-horsepower 6.0-liter LS2 V-8. Will 50 more horsepower and the option of two hood scoops save the day? Perhaps.

The 5.7-liter version out-performed the original GTO in nearly all ways except in its ability to garner attention. The anonymous shape of the Holden rarely draws a glance.

However, the ride and handling of the new GTO are much better than any of the previous vehicles from Pontiac with that name. Engine performance is formidable. The six-speed manual, an option, requires a firm hand to shift, however, and some details of the car are obvious holdovers from its right-hand drive origins.

The passenger compartment is roomy for adults, though only the front seats are really comfortable. The trunk is quite small.

Conclusion: Sometimes, performance simply is not enough. Until the GTO can draw a crowd, sales will continue to be slow.
