| The V-8 is back in Pontiac's largest sedan, and it is not just any V-8, either. This year, Cadillac's Northstar V-8 is standard equipment when you buy Pontiac's top of the line Bonneville. Other Bonnevilles make do with the normally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 that has been the main source of power in Bonnevilles for years. The Northstar does an outstanding job of moving the newest Bonneville and feels noticeably quicker than the V-6. Ride and handling depend on the trim level. At each step up the Bonneville line you will find suspensions that exert more control and cause the car to ride more firmly. Thus the base SE is the softest riding and vaguest handling Bonneville. The SLE rides more firmly and responds more readily to the primary controls. The top-of-the-line V-8 powered GXP is the best of the lot. Room is generally good, but rear seat comfort still suffers from a lack of headroom and poor seat cushions. Conclusion: While the Bonneville is a lot of car, it is not necessarily a lot of car for the money. Consider the purchase price and Bonnevilles can quickly end up competing in a price range where other cars provide more value. |
