With styling you either love or hate, and most people seem not to love it, the Aztek stumbles on for another year. New colors are the highlight for 2005.

Azteks come with either front- or all-wheel drive. A 3.4-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic make up the only drivetrain offered.

Performance is quick enough around town, but the engine begins to lose steam as speed builds. This makes passing and merging more challenging than you might expect based on the Aztek's eagerness when starting out.

Ride and handling are a mixed bag. The Aztek rides softly, but displays too many uncomfortable ride motions. When pushed through a corner, it understeers early.

Utility is a highlight, although the slope of the rear roof takes a toll on interior cargo capacity. Still, the Aztek has good room for cargo and passengers, regardless of their seating position. That does not mean that passengers in back will be comfortable. Their seat is too low.

Conclusion: Pontiac missed the boat with the Aztek. Those younger buyers who like its styling are turned off by the ride and handling calibrations and its starting price. Those who like the ride are not crazy about the styling.
