| Nissan's entry in the crowded subcompact field, the Sentra sedan, has models that run the gamut from the mundane to the mildly exciting. Base models with the 1.8-liter engine land in the former category, while SE-R and SE-R Spec V models can quicken the pulse of a driving enthusiast, at least a little. Basic versions do little to distinguish themselves in the compact car field. Acceleration with the base engine is slow, especially with the four-speed automatic. Stepping up to the 2.5-liter engine helps, while the SE-R Spec V's 2.5-liter four is slightly quicker. The automatic transmission shifts well. The manual transmissions have a slightly vague shift linkage. Ride is sometime abrupt, a common subcompact problem. Handling ranges from good in base models to very good in the SE-R and SE-R Spec V. Note that SE-R models, with the larger engine and no limited slip differential--part of the SE-R Spec V package--suffer some torque steer. The front seats offer average room and comfort. The rear seat occupants are less pampered, with leg room in short supply. Conclusion: The Sentra is a mid-pack finisher in the subcompact races. |
