Top Pick Nissan's crossover vehicle has set out on its own aesthetic trail. Its styling--and some features--will allow you to mistake it for nothing else.

Performance is quite good, thanks in large part to the standard CVT (continuously variable automatic transmission). It is exceptionally quick and responsive, which aids acceleration under all conditions and makes the Murano particularly good when passing and merging.

Handling is very good, although the car is quick to plow to the outside of turn on slippery surfaces. The ride is stable and composed on all but the worst pavement. Nissan in its advertising suggests that this is an SUV meant almost exclusively for paved surfaces. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is an option.

Inside, the Murano offers good space and comfort in the front and back seats. Cargo room is also respectable.

Conclusion: While people may note it first for its styling, the Murano is much more than just another pretty face.
