| Among the larger of the off-road capable SUVs, the Mitsubishi Montero turns in a mid-pack performance at best. Acceleration with the 3.8-liter V-6, the only engine offered, is limited by the weight of the vehicle. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. Despite generating only ordinary acceleration, the drivetrain is refined. Ride and handling are truck like, which is to be expected as this is a rugged and quite capable off-road vehicle. Expect sluggish responses to steering inputs and lots of busyness over broken pavement. Inside, the front seats are comfortable. Rear seat passengers also do reasonably well and cargo room is very good. Equipment levels are generous and the Montero is nicely assembled with a decidedly upscale look and feel inside and out. Conclusion: For rugged off roading, the Montero shines. Elsewhere, its star is not as bright. |
