| While Ford has pledged to create a unique identity for Mercury, it continues to rebadge Fords with the Mercury logo and send them on to dealers for sale. This time, the car being rebadged is the Ford Five Hundred. With a name change and a few styling changes, it comes the Mercury Montego. As with the Five Hundred, the interior is large and comfortable. The car cruises quietly. The ride is nicely controlled. Early production Montegos displayed better on-center steering feel than was the case with the Five Hundred. Unfortunately, the 3.0-liter engine drones away on acceleration in both versions. All-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission are options. Otherwise, front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic are standard. Pressed in corners, the Montego handled nicely and proved to be highly predictable. Conclusion: As with the Five Hundred, this is a thoroughly competent vehicle that should meet the needs of anyone who needs a spacious family sedan. What it lacks in inspiration, it makes up for with competence. | |
