| Long the mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the E-Class is an exceptional automobile. It offers one of the best ride-handling compromises available anywhere. The base suspension is excellent. Upgrades with the variable suspension also perform admirably. Handling is secure, predictable and balanced. The E-Class grips well in corners, though it lacks the ultimate driving feel and agility of its cross-country rival. It is still very good. The front seats are very nice. The rear, however, is not as roomy as one would like for the price. The trunk is spacious and easily accessed. The V-6 gasoline engine performs well. The V-8s are better in the performance arena, of course. However, the best choice of all, in non-California emissions states, could be the CDI diesel. It outperforms the V-6 gasoline engine, is smooth, quiet, smoke-free and returned nearly 29 miles to gallon in our tests. On the highway, it consistently produced mileage readings in the high 30 mile-per-gallon range with little effort. When driven carefully, it broke the 40 mile per gallon barrier, well above its EPA rating. Conclusion: One of the world's best sedans, regardless of the version chosen. |
