Mazda built its reputation on the smooth and seemingly effortless high-revving power of the rotary engine before the energy crises of the '70s and '80s ended its appeal by focusing our attention on its thirst for fuel. Now, the rotary is back in the RX-8 sports car. As the engine is unique, so is the layout of the car. The RX-8 has four clamshell doors and a cramped rear seat, giving the car four-passenger capabilities, at least in theory.

The engine has little power at lower speeds, but when revved, it propels the RX-8 briskly and with authority. The manual is the preferable transmission, although the automatic works well, too.

Handling is excellent. The ride is also very good with the base suspension. The sport upgrade tends to hammer some pavement breaks home to the passengers.

Bigger adults may feel crowded in front and will never fit in the back seat. The trunk is surprisingly large, but the trunk lid opening is small.

Conclusion: The RX-8 is a joy to drive because of its engine response and handling. The unique features, such as the clamshell doors and generally useless back seat, do little to enhance the vehicle, in our opinion.
