| The Mazda Miata proves that you don't have to have the fastest sports car to have fun driving. While there are cars that exceed the Miata's performance by just about any measure, none has the overall balance of performance, ride, handling and affordability that make the Miata so much fun. The base suspension does a fine job, in our opinion. The sport suspension can make the car harsh over some surfaces. Handling is responsive and balanced in ways few cars manage to equal. While the Miata seemed exceptionally solid when it was first introduced, the competition has discovered ways to make convertible bodies even more rigid, so the Miata no longer leads the pack in resistance to body shake and cowl quake over bumps. The base engine, as opposed to the MazdaSpeed turbo motor, does a fine job, too. Opting for a manual transmission makes the car more fun, but the automatic versions are also rewarding to drive. The cockpit is cozy, and taller adults should try the car with the top raised before buying. The trunk is small. Conclusion: The combination of a balanced performance and acceptable price has made the Miata hard to beat. It's just plain fun. |
