Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Mazda3 is based on the current European Ford Focus platform, a distinction that this car also shares with the Volvo S40 and V50, but not the Ford Focus currently sold in this country. This platform helps put the Mazda3 among the very best subcompacts. The ride is excellent for the field; nicely controlled yet also free of harshness. Handling also enjoys high marks for the balance and poise the car displays in a variety of maneuvers. Braking, too, is good. Front seats are supportive and roomy. As in other subcompacts, adults will find the rear seat tight with the front seats moved back. The sedan's trunk is none too spacious. Two engines are available: a 2.0-liter and 2.3-liter four. Both are refined. The 2.0-liter is hobbled by the automatic transmission, but turns in a good performance with the manual transmission. The 2.3-liter engine is generally more powerful, but does not turn the Mazda3 into a super fast subcompact, either. Conclusion: Among subcompacts, this is one of the best. |
