The GS lineup will be replaced within the year. In the meantime, these sedans offer buyers some rear-wheel drive competition for European sedans in the $40,000 to $50,000 price range.

Two models are offered: the GS 300 with an inline 3.0-liter six and the GS 430, featuring the 4.3-liter V-8 in the Lexus LS 430.

Both models offer roomy and comfortable front seat accommodations. Rear seating is marred by a lack of headroom and the trunk is small for the field.

On the road, both vehicles offer impressive acceleration once underway and the five-speed automatic transmission shifts with near perfection. Performance from the V-8 is most impressive, but the six is no slouch, either, despite being about a second slower to 60 miles per hour. The ride is comfortable; handling is secure.

Conclusion: Until the new 2006 versions appear, the GS lineup will provide the Lexus faithful with an impressive alternative to several European premium sedans.
