The mid-year introduction of the new Spectra has vastly improved the quality of this model. Now based on the Hyundai Elanta, the new Spectra comes as a sedan or wagon. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers relatively quick acceleration when mated to the five-speed manual transmission. Cars with the four-speed automatic prove to be less lively, but still adequate.

Ride is good for the subcompact field. Handling is also competent. As with the Elantra on which it is based, the Spectra now displays reasonable grip and moderate body lean during brisk cornering.

Comfort is average, front and rear. Room is adequate for six-footers in the front and reasonable for two in the back seat. Trunk room is just below average for the field. Warranty protection is outstanding, with 5-years/60,000 miles bumper-to-bumper protection and 10-year/100,000 mile coverage for the drivetrain.

Conclusion: There are better performers in the subcompact field, but the Spectra is now a reasonable choice based on price, performance and warranty protection.
