| Kia's first entrant in the SUV field, the Sorento offers robust body-on-frame construction and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine as standard equipment. The design is pleasing, with more than one onlooker thinking it a previous generation Lexus RX. Acceleration with the V-6 and four-speed automatic transmission is acceptable. Eager off the line, the Sorento's enthusiasm for acceleration wanes as speeds climb. The transmission helps by generally downshifting promptly for passing or merging. Four-wheel drive is optional. Full-time four-wheel drive comes only with the purchase of a luxury package. Ride is acceptable, although some rough pavement can upset the passengers. Handling is competitive within the truck-based SUV field. Accommodations are good in front; less inviting in the second row seats, which is also competitive within its field. Conclusions: The price is right, the equipment levels are generous and the performance is within the range expected of this type of vehicle. It even handles off-road treks with competence. |
