Kia's entry level vehicle, the Rio, comes in two models: a four-door sedan and a five-door wagon, known as the Cinco. Neither comes close to meeting the performance capabilities of the best subcompacts, although both can be purchased new for much less than the price of the average used car in this country. Buyers, however, are urged to look beyond the low price. The 1.6-liter engine delivers tepid acceleration with either the five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. If you expect fuel economy to shine as a byproduct of the weak acceleration, think again. Results are mediocre for the subcompact class. The ride is soft and quite compliant over most bumps, but handling suffers as a result. Maneuverable around town, the Rio becomes vague and clumsy at highway speeds. Comfort for adults is fair in front, poor for taller passengers in the rear. Noise levels are relatively high, even for this field. Conclusion: Okay, the warranty is very good, but the rest of the car is simply not competitive.
