| Long the favorite of hard core off roaders, the Wrangler comes into its own in the most difficult terrain far away from pavement. Where other SUVs struggle, or fail to make the grade, the Wrangler scampers with ease. Low range gearing combined with the five-speed manual transmission provides more than enough engine braking for downhill control and more than enough power for crawling up hill. On the road, the Wrangler is less impressive. It is rough riding, noisy and, while maneuverable at low speeds, not overly capable during high speed cornering. The newly arrived Unlimited, which adds nearly a foot to the Wrangler's length for more interior cargo capacity and room, stabilizes the ride somewhat on pavement without doing much to diminish the vehicle's off-road prowess. Conclusion: There's only one Jeep Wrangler and it comes with overwhelming doses of brand character. People interested in going off road need look at nothing else. |
