| Cute styling has in no way diminished the capabilities of the Jeep Liberty, which took the place of the Cherokee several years ago in this country. The new model is good on pavement and, with four-wheel drive, thoroughly capable when taken off road. Most are powered by a smooth and reasonably powerful V-6, although a four-cylinder gasoline engine is also available. New for 2005 is a diesel version, which feels somewhat sluggish and has some diesel clatter, but promises significantly better fuel economy ratings. While not as peppy as the six, it offers sufficient acceleration for family driving. Front seats are comfortable, though narrow. Front footwells are also narrow. In the rear, room is passable. Seating height is good. Cargo space with the second row seats up is modest, but these seats are split and fold easily. Off road, the Liberty is nearly unstoppable. Two four-wheel drive systems are offered, each with a low range for serious jaunts in the woods. Conclusion: This is the compact sport utility vehicle for people who value off-road capabilities, though it is also acceptable when used exclusively on pavement. |
