| Entirely new for 2005, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has added some inches to its interior and exterior dimensions, making these vehicles much more family friendly. They still trail most midsize sport utility vehicles in interior measurements, however. Still, back seat accommodations are noticeably better for taller adults. The front seats are also comfortable. Newly available is Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which gives Grand Cherokees so equipped a great deal of added punch. Initial drives have been limited to Hemi-powered models, which are extremely responsive. Ride qualities are good. Handling is also improved over the past Grand Cherokee. Despite the added size, this new Jeep Grand Cherokee is still competent off road, even in some difficult circumstances. However, real off-road enthusiasts will probably be worried by the larger exterior dimensions, which limit capabilities in exceptionally rough terrain. Conclusions: With more SUV buyers ignoring off-road capabilities, this Jeep has gone where it needed to go to regain some lost sales. Performance with the Hemi trumps most other SUVs, although fuel economy can be expected to be poor. |
