| Jaguar's middle sedans, which evokes classic Jaguar styling themes, are available in three series, each with its own engine. Base 3.0-liter models use a V-6 that delivers adequate but unexceptional levels of power for the luxury field. The 4.2-liter V-8 does much better while the supercharged R can out accelerate some sports cars. All engines now use a six-speed automatic transmission. It shifts smoothly. Handling is very good in all versions. Jaguar offers a sports package that makes modest improvements to steering responses and cornering power while extracting little penalty in riding comfort. The supercharged R model is the most impressive of the lot. Ride qualities are stable over a wide range of surfaces. The base suspension in the 3.0-liter model could use a little more control at speed. Interior accommodations front and rear are cozy, with rear seat passengers subjected to a loss of leg room with the front seats moved back. The trunk is small. Conclusion: A viable entry in the luxury field that is now able to hold its own against much of the competition. It is very pleasant to drive. |
