One good crossover sport utility vehicle, the Santa Fe, obviously deserves another. At least that seems to have been the thinking at Hyundai with the introduction of the smaller and less costly Tucson. This newest Hyundai crossover offers three trim levels: GL, GLS and LX. The base GL is generously equipped and features a 2.0-liter, 140-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Performance is adequate but, when pressed, a little raucous. Buyers can take the manual five-speed transmission or, for $850 more, opt for the four-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is an option only in manual shift GLs. Front-wheel drive is standard. GLS and LX models come with a 173-horsepower, 2.7-liter V-6. Performance and refinement levels with this engine are a noticeable improvement over the four-cylinder model. A four-speed automatic is standard with the V-6. All-wheel drive is optional. Ride and handling are pleasant and competent. The Tucson handles bumps well. Steering is a little light, however. Lean in corners is noticeable, but not unsettling. Front seat comfort is good for adults. In the rear, adults will find legroom cramped when the front seats are moved all the way back. No third row seat is available. Cargo room is modest but useful, which is common in this vehicle category. Conclusion: The Hyundai Tucson combines a competitive performance with an impressive list of standard features, even in the base model, and an attractive price. Most people, we suspect, will opt for the V-6.
