Hyundai has juggled trim levels and styling details in the Tiburon for 2005. The base, or GS model, is equipped with a 138-horsepower four. The GT features a 2.7-liter V-6, which is also the engine in the sportier SE. A four-speed automatic and five-speed manual transmission are offered in GS and GT models. SE buyers can have the automatic or a six-speed manual.

Performance with the V-6 is quick; the four lags noticeably. The six-speed shifts nicely but is missing the precision found in shift linkages on other sporty cars. Handling is good but understeer shows up quickly--considering the sporty nature of the car--in brisk cornering.

Ride comfort also trails competitors. The Tiburon can jolt occupants on rough pavement and the rear hatch can creak at those times. Front seats are low, which adds to the effort of entering and exiting the Tiburon. Once in, sunroof models may limit headroom. The rear seat is suitable for children or shorter than average adults. Cargo room is okay; the rear seat folds and the hatchback makes loading reasonably easy.

Conclusion: Swoopy styling and a reasonable price, combined with a 5-year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and 10-year/100,000 mile drivetrain protection, make this car acceptable, though there are better choices.
