Honda introduced a host of changes to the S2000 two-seat, rear-wheel drive sports car last year. This year, it did nothing more, nor did it really need to. The S2000 is an excellent sports car. It is light, responsive, incredibly agile and great fun to drive. Handling is excellent. The engine produces its best performance only when taken into its higher speed ranges. The six-speed manual transmission, the only gearbox available, shifts beautifully. On the negative side of the ledger, the S2000 is a tight fit for larger adults. It is also noisy and stiffly sprung, producing harsh ride motions at times despite changes in the suspension that were to make the car more comfortable. In other words, the S2000 is a pure sports car with only a few concessions made to comfort. Among them are a power top, electric windows, remote control locks and air conditioning. Conclusion: A wonderful sports car, but one that has to be accepted on its own terms. Other fine sports cars are less demanding, but in the eyes of purists, also less rewarding to own and drive. |
