Top Pick Sharing a platform, engine and transmission with the Acura MDX, it should come as no surprise that the performance of the Honda Pilot ranks well above average for the mid-size crossover SUV class. The engine is smooth, powerful and refined. The transmission shifts smoothly. Acceleration is very good while handling is secure. Although lean during brisk cornering is quite noticeable, it is not unsettling.

The ride is firm, meaning that few bumps will escape the attention of the driver or passengers, but still acceptable. For adults, the Pilot is roomy and comfortable in the front seats and satisfactory in the second row. The standard split and folding third row seats are for children. Carrying eight passengers leaves little room for cargo.

Conclusion: The Pilot is shorter, but wider and taller, than its first cousin, the Acura MDX. It is also nearly nine cubic feet roomier and carries one more person. So why pay more for an Acura?
