| Honda calls the Insight a high performance car, and they are right. In this case, "high performance" refers not to speed and acceleration, but to fuel economy. The first gasoline-electric hybrid to be sold in this country, the two-seat, ultra light weight Insight is the nation's fuel economy champion. EPA ratings go up to 66 miles per gallon, though careful driving has produced even more impressive results than that. Unfortunately, for all its fuel economy, many buyers will not find the Insight practical. The car is small, with very little space for any cargo. Two people, the maximum passenger count, will have to pack carefully for even a weekend trip. The Insight is also firm riding and noisy--remember that sound insulation adds weight--and acceleration from the three-cylinder engine and electric motor is weak. Buyers opting for the automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission) rather than the five-speed manual also give up about 10 miles per gallon on the highway. Other than the CVT, air conditioning is the only other option. Conclusion: Perfect for the urban commute and trips around town by people who value fuel economy above all other factors. Note that even with today's high gasoline prices, you will probably never be able to save enough on gasoline to offset its added cost over a base Civic, which is roomier, faster and more comfortable. |
