| Envisioned to appeal to 20-something college students looking for a mobile extension of their college dorm rooms, the Element has missed that mark. Instead, it has appealed to an eclectic mix of buyers who range widely in age and interests. Drawing this group is a vehicle that looks like no other. It is a box, pure and simple. Inside, the emphasis is on utility with vinyl floor coverings and water resistant upholstery. The four doors open like the clamshell doors in an extended cab pickup. That's great for loading bulky items, but with the seatbelts attached to the back door, it also means that front passengers have to unbuckle so that rear seat riders can get in and out. Front seating is comfortable. The back seat is too low for adults who will end up with a knees-in-the-air seating posture. The seats fold up, not down, for cargo and can be fastened against the rear windows or removed. The Element rides and drives much better than appearances might suggest. It is at its best for front passengers. Rear seat riders are between the rear wheels where they end up feeling every bump. Handling is predictable and stable. Though lean in cornering is felt, the Element never feels tippy. Conclusion: This is the perfect workhorse for people who need something small and utilitarian. It is also ideal for people who want to avoid the cookie-cutter styling that has predominated in recent years |
