| Four door sedans, a three-door performance hatchback and several coupes make up the Civic lineup for 2005. Minor changes for this year make little real difference in the cars, which are among the best subcompacts. Buyers wanting the best fuel economy will look at the Hybrid gasoline-electric sedan or one of the HX coupes. Most customers, however, will end up with a standard sedan or coupe. Regardless, Civics deliver some of the best riding qualities in the subcompact field. The suspensions are compliant, yet firm enough to offer good control. The sportiest model, the Si hatchback, exercises the most control and is, therefore, the least comfortable in the minds of most passengers. Acceleration in this model is also the strongest. Other Civics turn in a good performance with the manual transmission. They are somewhat slower with the automatic. Note that the Hybrid and HX models feature a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. All the others feature a four-speed automatic transmission. Room in front is good. The rear seat in sedans is acceptable for the subcompact field, which is to say space is okay for adults on short trips. Coupes and the Si hatchback are tighter in the rear compartment. Conclusion: One of the best with a model or version for everyone. Subcompact buyers have to shop the Civic. |
