The CR-V is Honda's entry into the passenger-car based sport utility crossover field. As such, it delivers the ride and handling characteristics that you would expect to find in a passenger car. Its derivation also means that rugged off-road travels are out, even when all-wheel, rather than front-wheel, drive is specified. Room is very good in the front and adjustable rear seats. The CR-V treats adults better than many larger SUVs in the back seat. Cargo room is also good, but rather than having a tailgate that opens from the top or bottom, the cargo door in the CR-V opens from the side, making loading from a curb unnecessarily difficult. The parking brake, which looks like a grab bar, is too cute for its own good. The four-cylinder engine labors heroically, but is unable to match the V-6s in competitive vehicles. It is still fast enough for family transport, though the motor will intrude sonically on full-throttle acceleration runs. The manual transmission aids performance a bit. Conclusion: An able performer, the CR-V has to be counted among the best of its lot. |
