Always in the race for family sedan sales leadership in the United States, the Honda Accord enters 2005 with some significant changes. Most notable is the arrival of a Hybrid gasoline-electric model that boosts performance and fuel economy with the V-6 engine. The availability of side curtain and side thorax-protecting airbags is also expanded. Available as a coupe or four-door, the Accord sedan is roomy and comfortable for adults, front and rear. The ride is firm, but generally a good compromise between comfort and control. As a result, handling is very good. The Accord is nicely balanced in corners, although exceptionally brisk turns will demonstrate that the car uses front-wheel drive. Four-cylinder models accelerate nicely with the five-speed manual transmission, but feel a little lifeless with the automatic. The V-6 is powerful with the automatic and the Hybrid V-6 performs even better, while turning in four-cylinder compact car gasoline mileage. The Hybrid's operation is mostly transparent to the driver. Only the gasoline engine's shutdown while stopped and its mild shudder when reactivated sets the Hybrid apart from the standard V-6 models. Conclusion: Sporty enough without being overbearing about it, the Accord delivers an ideal performance in the minds of many buyers. It would be hard to do better at this price level. |
