Based on the mid-sized GM sport utility vehicle platform, the Envoy is available in standard and extended (XL) length versions. It is also available as a unique semi pickup truck that can be converted into an enclosed SUV, called the XUV, through the use of a sliding roof panel and midgate. This vehicle rides on the extended wheelbase, but seats only five.

The standard length body is powered by a 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine and seats five. The extended wheelbase model seats seven and can be powered by either the 4.2-liter six or a 5.3-liter V-8. Similar models include the Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Isuzi Ascender. The Saab 9-7 will also be based on this platform.

Envoys ride well over most surfaces, but fall short of ideal responses over larger bumps. Handling mimics the other vehicles based on this platform. It is somewhat clumsy, with spongy responses to changes in the too-light steering. Grip in corners is mediocre.

The Envoy offers four-wheel drive with a low range for more ambitious off-road treks. Four-wheel drive can also be left engaged on dry pavement. Six cylinder versions are powerful enough in the five-passenger version, though this engine fails to meet the standards for smoothness and refinement set by some competitors on full-throttle acceleration. The V-8, optional on seven-passenger and XUV models, feels stronger and turns in a more refined performance.

Interior room is quite good, even with the short wheelbase body. Third row seats in the seven-passenger XL model hold adults, although the cushions fail to provide long-trip comfort.

Conclusion: Something for everyone, with the XUV unduplicated by any other GM vehicle.
