GMC mimics Chevrolet in its pickup truck lineup, offering a wide range of models and options: regular, extended and crew cabs, short and long load boxes, one V-6, three V-8s and a diesel, automatic or manual transmissions and the choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. You can order whatever you want, from a bare-bones work truck to a plush family transporter. Here are some points to remember: The V-6 powered versions are best bought for light duty work. Most buyers will be better served by the 4.8- or 5.3-liter V-8. The 6.0-liter V-8 is more powerful, but also less economical. Few need its added horsepower and torque. The diesel in the heavy duty model is very good. Sierras ride like a truck, but they are still very good within their field. The ride is more compliant than that found in most other pickups. Still, expect an empty Sierra to be busy on rough pavement. If among the best for ride qualities, they trail some competitors for handling precision. Despite this, they still offer reasonable road manners for the field. Quadrasteer, available on some models, improves maneuverability and stability when towing.
