| While the previous Mustang had been updated throughout its life, the basic platform dated to 1979. This new model was definitely past due. It was also worth the wait. The new Mustang, using the styling themes of the second generation Mustang fastback from 1967, rides and handles very nicely. Drivers will find the car a lot fun, especially when it is equipped with the V-8. This model's balance in corners proved to be very good. The V-6 also delivers a credible performance, although the exhaust note on full-throttle acceleration is nowhere near as pleasing as the V-8's. Acceleration is also less impressive. The automatic shifts nicely; the manual in the V-8 is also quite good. Inside, there is more room in front, which was needed. The rear seat continues to be for children or infrequent transport of adults. The recessed instruments can be hard to read while wearing sunglasses. The coupe is available now. A convertible arrives for spring. Conclusion: A wonderful effort that should keep customers buying. However, let us all hope that Ford does not try to stretch the life of this platform out for a quarter century. |
